Refuse

~ Refuse ~

“When normality requires you to hide your true face, when the crowd want you to silence your voice to meet their approval, when you’re asked to abandon what sets your soul on fire for the sake of sensibility and sanity – refuse. Whatever life is, it certainly isn’t no little rehearsal for you to drift passively through as your dreams and desires lie gathering dust and cobwebs in some dark, forgotten corner. Your life is precious and your life is now, so muster up the courage to live the one you were born for. Muster up the courage to live the life that leaves your bones shaking with adventure and your heart aching with passion.”

~ No Final Solution ~

~ No Final Solution ~

The doors have shut and
the people await their fate
in these cities
in these chambers
where we live and die
and fight to survive

amid it all I see
the fearful eyes
the hands clutching together
sometimes in prayer
sometimes in marriage
but always in futility

in this world nothing is certain
but the panic and pain
the decay and death
the crashing and the burning

yet with these brains inside of us
and these hearts that plead for peace
we struggle and seek
a way out – a secret door
that leads to something else

but it cannot be found
and so here I stand also
trapped with everybody
awaiting my fate
in these cities
in these chambers

with my hands
scraping the walls
scraping at this typewriter
trying to find the way out

before this slaughterhouse

does what it does best

~ In Too Deep ~

~ In Too Deep ~

I walk this urban jungle
and I see people so lost
wandering through life
desperate and depraved
clinging onto lottery tickets
and shopping bags
and briefcases
and beer bottles
looking for the way out

I see people so lost
stuck in a movie they never asked to star in
working for causes they don’t believe in
trapped in lives they never imagined
a life where the tramp and the lawyer
wear the same frown

I see souls starving and dying
behind counters
behind desks
behind smartphones
behind steering wheels
mothers, fathers,
teachers
bus drivers

people so lost
in too deep
drowning in traffic jams
while turning the radio louder
and louder
to escape the reality

that kills us all

~ Stay Wild ~

~ Stay Wild ~

Dear child, I write you from afar
and ask only one thing for you to take into consideration for your one precious life.

Through the toils of the years, and the battles of society – I ask you to stay wild.
Consider this for you were forged in the stars, and assembled in the wilderness;
and – though illusion may pervade – nature will always remain your only real home.

Shake loose the shackles of the poachers whenever their locks tighten so.
Fight off the tyrants whenever they go near what must not be touched.
Spit out the decaying taste of the plastic soul’s dust.
Never wander too far into corporate falseness.
Stay wild – in mind, body, heart and soul.

Whenever you can, get back to your nature;
live out on the fringes, and exist on the edges,
among the wild eyes and undomesticated souls,
for that is where the magic happens.

Entertain new developments;
playfully dance with new philosophies;
and toy with new technologies
but never forget to come back,
into the trees; to the depths of the waters.
and the murkiness of the unknown.

For that is where you truly belong:
deep between the roots of the forest;
in the expansive emptiness of the clouds;
and the timeless universe of the ocean.

Where the magic happens

in the wild.

~ An Inner Nature

~ An Inner Nature ~

The wolves are howling in my mind
The lions are prowling this heart of mine
The eagles are nesting within my brain
Nurturing a life which has no name

Any attempt to claim it will be rejected
Any offers to buy it won’t be accepted
Any nets that are cast will be shaken free
Any spears will bounce off the bark of me

Because behind this soul which they try to pierce
There is a creature roaming wild and fierce
Behind this skin which they try to maim
There is a tiger which cannot be tamed

And no matter how much they cut me down
My roots still run below the ground
No matter how much they burn my leaves
My springs still see them return with ease

Because behind these eyes that lie wide and open
Are the wings of birds which cannot be broken
Within this blood that flows like the breeze
Is a spirit of joy which will never be seized

And no matter what they say and do
The light of my soul will still shine through
And any attempt to poach it will be met with rage
For a child of the wild does not belong in a cage.

~ A Warrior of the Wild ~

“And there comes a moment in your life when you know that they have failed to break you down. As you emerge with those eyes full of fire from the swamps and storms, as you throw down the muck and mess and madness – as you stagger forth fearlessly with the light of the cosmos still blazing bright in your heart. You will know that they have failed to break you down. When you hear that wolf still growling inside your head – still untamed, still rising up – your raw truth still propelling you forward against all the hollow-hearted and empty-eyed creatures who abandoned the very essence of life and themselves. You will know they have failed to break you down. When you remember that you chose love and not hate; courage and not fear; freedom and not slavery. And though your journey through the wild may have left you scratched and scarred, your very flesh will shine in the sun like a beautiful beacon of victory. You will bear the marks that show you fiercely followed your heart – that show you walked the path of the wild warrior. You’ll bear the marks that show you went out there and lived a life, and didn’t just exist in one.”

~ Time To Rise ~

~ Time To Rise ~

“I know you kept it hidden away for so long. Facing out at that grey world, you were sure it would never understand the things you kept locked away deep inside yourself. You stared into their eyes and sensed that they weren’t ready for the things you had contained in your heart. It was a world of culture and convention; of tradition and expectation; of concrete and sanity. You felt incompatible with what was presented to you. And so you locked it all away. You suppressed your inner voice; you hid your true nature. But please wild one: a little courage – a little courage. Whether you feel like it or not, this world is your home and there are people and places out there ready for you. With a little trust in yourself and you will be led down paths of tremendous beauty and mystery and magic. You will create and do the things that will leave you truly fulfilled. You will experience a new plain of being – the plain of the one who lives every day as an epic adventure in the unknown. Yes, not all will appreciate your authenticity, but the ones who do will welcome you with loving arms. So go on – go forth and take the leap of faith. Throw open your heart. Let the spirit birds locked away inside rise up into skies of freedom. Let yourself migrate towards the shores of your own destiny. Live a life so fierce and fearless that the others have no choice but to join you on the quest of freedom. God only knows, in these dark times we could do with a few more free birds up there to inspire us all.”

~ What If? ~

~ What if? ~

Don’t ignore it. Don’t shrug it off. Don’t wait for it to go away or, worse yet, try to make it go away yourself. That deep feeling of abandonment towards something is your call to arms and it is your duty to follow it wide-eyed into the wilderness whenever you feel it. Such a neglect of the soul can lead to a hollow-hearted existence in which you try to buy satisfaction externally because you have rendered yourself powerless to obtain it from within. It can lead to a life of silent heartache and confusion. In a convoluted society where it’s so easy to have a thousand voices scramble your senses, one must keep their ears to their heart and learn what makes it beat with purpose and desire. One must know when to respond and not to ignore the importance of it. Because what if you thought the pull of your destiny was nothing more than a stage you were going to grow out of? What if you that voice you silenced out of fear was the voice to lead others home through the swamp? What if that walk into the woods you wanted to take but were too afraid to finally led you out towards that place you could call home?

In this life there are few souls more incomplete than those who ignore a strong innate calling – who suppress a deep inner voice and instead allow themselves to be moulded and melded into a formulaic being who lives a life conditioned for them instead of the one they were truly destined for. Such a person grows old in bitter contempt because they allowed the fire in their eye to slowly dwindle away in exchange for some convenient and crowd-pleasing state of existence. They are left staring wistfully out of windows in morning traffic jams wondering what the hell ever happened to the colour and magic and madness of life. They are left looking for non-existent ways to alleviate them from their spiritual emptiness. There is a feeling which will warn you from this and you will know it when you feel it. You will feel it in that burning ache in the heart, in that rumble of fire in the belly – in that rushing in the veins which makes you feel strong enough to march to victory against a thousand armies. That feeling is a light, a guide – a shaman – and it is your duty to follow it whenever you feel it calling within you.

We are our species so lost and led easily astray in the need to be accepted or to be blindly ushered through the journey of life. Too often we drown out our inner voice and suppress our true nature. Too often drift into idleness and choose convenience over exploration, acceptance over authenticity, comfort over freedom. Such a nature has lead to a society where mediocrity and banality flourishes while the real genuine thing sits ignored in the shadows. It has lead to style winning over substance, to pretty fonts and filters being more important than meaningful words – to fake plastic faces being what’s celebrated over the gritty face of someone’s raw and rugged beautiful self. It had led to a society where others are afraid to follow their inner voice.

Something real and genuine is a rarity in those crowds of conformity and convention. And now the world needs more than ever those who are unafraid to follow the burning desire within them. So if you feel that fire of passion flaming at your gut, don’t shy away, don’t hold back – don’t tell yourself it’s ‘just a phase’. Throw it all onto the fire and give this world the brightness and warmth it needs. We need the ones with the fire in their eyes – the ones who are ready to fearlessly chase what their very hearts ache for. We need the ones who are willing to go out there and rescue their truth from the wilderness. What the world needs is the raw and rugged face of you, fearless and free, living life so beautifully and authentically that those around you will have no choice but to join you on the same path. The hour is already late wild warrior so rise up now and let your unique passion and madness leave its stain upon the world.

This world waits desperately to hear the symphony of your soul.

~ A Suppression of Expression ~

~ A Suppression of Expression ~

“But why can’t you just speak about how you feel?” she asked me. “Why can’t you just be open about it instead of keeping it all locked up inside your head? You don’t always have to be alone. Just say how you feel. Please – just share something with me.”

The words came and hit me like freight trains of realisation. After a long day of motorbiking through the mountains, there I sat drunk in a home-stay in Northern Vietnam with a young Danish girl, once again unable to verbally communicate the thoughts that haunted the hallways of my mind – that scratched and clawed viciously at the walls of my skull. Such a task was clearly not an issue for herself. After travelling together for only just a few days, already she had stared into my eyes and spilled the dark stories of her troubled past. She had told me in detail of her eating disorders and the beatings from her father – of the eight years of therapy and depression. In the drunken haziness of smoky rooms in foreign lands, she had invited me into the unique wilderness of her mind and allowed me to see its rugged contents in all their scratched and scarred beauty.

It was always comforting to have such conversations out on the road; a stranger from another country pouring their heart out to you was for me one of the greatest experiences of travelling. It was a window into the human condition – something that was all too rare to experience in the everyday existence of life back home. So far on my travels I had stared into eyes and listened to the secrets of many fellow damaged souls out there wandering the world. I had heard tales of death and destruction – of pain and desperation. On sunset beaches, mountain trails and in smoky bars, I had travelled into the worlds of other souls and got lost in their rugged expanses. This time the directness of her questions made me suddenly realise it was always me listening in to words but never opening up myself and expressing my own inner secrets. Once again I sat tethered down by something, hesitating, puffing on a cigarette and sipping a beer to stop my mouth from spewing its mess and madness upon her. “It really helps to talk about” she said, spotting my stalling. “Speaking to someone about my problems really helped clear all the mess from my mind. You will feel better after I promise.”

It was true – it was true. Like her and the others, I also had a lot of chaos in my psyche that I needed to share in some way. At times I so desperately yearned for another to come and take a walk in the wilderness of my mind and know what it was like not to be alone with all the thoughts swarming around inside of it. Often back home I stood frustrated before non-understanding eyes with every ounce of me aching for some form of genuine interaction, and now here with this girl was the perfect opportunity. But once again my tongue stuttered and flailed around in my mouth as something restrained me from sharing the things I had locked up inside of me. The thought hit me that I was a hypocrite; I always wanted my fellow species to throw away their masks and makeup and speak from the heart, yet here I was again not capable to do it myself. Staring down the barrel of the loaded eyes of another human-being, I could never find the words to express how I felt. Unlike her, there was no therapist out there for me. The conversation shifted as we went back to small talk with the other group of backpackers before we went to bed and sank into the silence of the night.

One day of biking later and we were once again drunk after having street drinks and karaoke with the locals. Now alone in the night under the light of the full moon, we sat entwined on a bridge in the centre of town as the 3am silence enveloped the urban landscape that lay sprawled out around us. She continued to share some more things with me while asking again to share my problems with her. After a while I uttered a couple of vague things about past battles of depression and a personality disorder before retreating back to the beer and cigarette. The words came out jumbled and restrained; even here far away from home in the drunken company of this girl I trusted, I still couldn’t really let another fully into my own mind. She seemed pleased that I had opened up a little bit but we both knew I was still holding back – that I was alone with my thoughts and problems as I had always been. Together physically with another soul, I sat once again in the solitary fields of my mind, staring up into skies and wishing for another to come and join me completely in my wilderness.

Later on that evening when the beer cans lay empty and she had gone to bed, I went to get my backpack and reached for the pen and paper; in times when the storm inside my skull got too fierce, I always reached for the pen and the paper. With them in hand I walked out onto the balcony and sat down at the table. Back alone and safe from the eyes of another, finally I could write down and clearly communicate the thoughts inside my head. Like she had needed the therapist to vent her thoughts and secrets, I needed the pen and the solitude to finally express from the depths of my soul – to cut the tether and rise up freely from the mental tyranny that was the suppression of expression.

As the words started raining down, I stared out at all the houses across the river and wondered how many others out there were trying to summon the strength to voice the things they had hidden away inside themselves for so long. Who else was out there? What were they hiding and holding inside of themselves? The thought of it all kept me scribbling away as the first embers of daylight crept over the horizon. It wasn’t long before I had bled my brain dry onto the page. Out it had all came in an explosive burst. The existential pain. The desperation. The loneliness. The alienation. The fact I had fallen for a girl with a boyfriend. The fear that I would be alone on those balconies of isolation until the dying of my days. Finally it all flowed out freely. Like a dam that had finally been released, waterfalls of thought poured effortlessly onto the page, surging forward from the source of the soul. I looked down at what I had written and felt my mind return to a calm state. Once again, I had found the release I needed via the pen and paper.

It is true what you told me Signe. In this life we all need to find a way to finally express the things we have locked up deep inside of us. After a certain amount of time of being alone with our struggles, we need another soul to come and take a trip inside ourselves so that we aren’t suffocated by our own individual pain and madness. For me I could not find the way to face you so know that the words on this paper are my total therapy; know that they save me from complete annihilation and self-destruction. This is the only gateway to the depths of myself I truly know. With these words I lead you into my wild, and show the solitary places my soul resides. With these words I drag you into the woods of madness, and steal the sanity from you. With these words I attempt to say what can’t be expressed in words, but only felt in that burning feeling in the gut, that ache in the heart – that existential pain in the soul that longs to liberate itself from being totally alone in the great enveloping ocean of existence. You saved yourself with therapy but know that these are the words that save me. These are the words that stop me from falling from those balconies of isolation. These are the words that stop me from drowning in my own madness. These are the words that open me up so you can come and finally see what’s inside.

Welcome to the haunted woods of my twisted mind.

Sorry for the mess, but it’s the only home I know.

~ A Storm From Within ~

~ A Storm From Within ~

“It takes courage to be yourself. It takes courage to walk your own path. It takes courage to pursue the life you truly desire and not the one expected of you. Too often you will be surrounded by those who want to see you fail; by those who will seek to pull you back into the darkness in which they dwell because your breaking free causes them to reflect on their own choices and limitations. Throughout the ages of human history the mavericks and pioneers and dreamers have faced such a challenge when liberating themselves from cultural conformity and convention. Many are tamed and return to the safe farm of normality with their dreams and desires slowly gathering dust in dark, forgotten corners. Many let those voices of fear and doubt also infect and infest their own minds. It’s no easy feat to break free from the mould to live a life of total authenticity and personal truth. But there will be ways to stay strong to who you truly are as you walk the path through the wild to the shores of your destiny. Stuff your skull full of madness; overload your heart with passion; summon a storm from deep within your soul. Shake some windows, rattle some walls – let the words of your heart rain down mercilessly upon the blank pages of the world. Don’t apologise for the mess and madness. Let your spiritual thunder awaken this world into life.

Let your soul’s lightning ignite the darkness of the night.”
